a blessed March 2011...

Meeting our new niece, Evelyn, for the first time

*family shot in NE, enjoying no coat and sandal weather!!!

March was a month of frustration.  Frustration in being sick again and again.  Frustration in the cold wet windy weather with no sign of spring in sight.  Frustration with potty training not going well.  Frustration in having to find child-care for the boys 6 times to do different school things with or for G.  Frustration at work for S with many different issues.  Frustration with door falling off the van and the stress and mess that needed to go into fixing that.  Frustration in the momentum we were building in organizing and home life coming to a drastic halt...even going backwards.  Frustration in everyone's attitudes.  While it is not always easy for us to accept help, we were truly blessed by others this month.  And for that we got over our crummy attitudes and were very thankful.  Thankful for those who watched the boys or all the kids so we could do some fun school activities.  Thankful for a neighbor who made us supper (after watching our kids).  Thankful for a sister-in-law who vacuumed the entire house (while watching the boys).  Thankful for all the help I got when our van door fell off.  Thankful for neighbors who were willing to watch the kids and pick me up from the shop.  Thankful for prior insurance company who completely covered the door falling off, no questions or hassles, as it seemed to be a result from the accident we had a year and a half ago (and thankful that van doors just don't fall off without reason).  Thankful for family and friends who invited us for playdates while S was working some long hours.  So while in my head I kept thinking that it was such a carpy month, when I reflected on all the blessings that were shown to us by others, I was a little overwhelmed.  God does not promise us an easy life, but He does promise to provide us with the means to do the work He has set before us.  So thank you Lord for sending us others this month to bless us and help us make it through.  And thank you to all who helped us out, we love you and appreciate you very much.

G notes:
  • I was able to spend a lot of time with G at school this month which she really loved (I did too =).  I went on a field trip with her, helped out on the playground and in the classroom for lunch twice this month, and helped with a classroom project.  We also had CE night, and parent-teacher conferences which made for a busy month for us at school.  Her conferences went great and it is so neat to see her growth and improvement as well as have her teacher affirm that too.
  • She all of a sudden looks way too grown up.  Maybe because she is acting that way too with being more independent and helpful.
  • And then she throws a huge fussy hissy fit about W or C having something she wants and we are reminded that yes, she is just 5.  (To which we promptly remind her that she is 5 and a big kindergartener and should not act like that!)
 W notes:
  • W is becoming quite "proficient" in his play kitchen.  We have been getting all sorts of meals and treats consisting of dominoes acting as "chicken with a reduced spicy green pepper sauce", "mango muffins with a phenomenal crumble topping", and "lemon torte with cream whipped to stiff peaks", just to name a few of his dishes.  One of my favorite shows is America's Test Kitchen on PBS, and W loves it too...maybe a little too much!
  • He is trying to talk with big people grammer, and not getting it.  It is too cute to hear him talk that way, and I find myself talking the same with him just because it is too cute.  But as S reminded me, he will never talk the correct way if we don't!  So, W, is is "WE are going to the store, not US is going to the store"
  • And he is going to be a heartbreaker with the way he can smile and wink...I think we are in trouble!
C notes:
  • C is now a singing fool!  He is picking up all the silly songs we sing for stuff around the house (what, you don't have a pick-up, wash-up, and onsie song?), as well as songs we hear in church, G comes home with from school, the library, and of course CDs we are listening to as well.
  • Most of the time he is so good-natured, but that "two" personality is starting, because if something doesn't go his way, he screams and lets us know, and then keeps screaming and fussing and can't let it go.  I know the other two kids went through stages like this too, but it can be hard to remember that...
  • Continues his quest to do everything and anything that his siblings do.  Especially his brother.  Crazy thing is that he is starting to be able to physically and mentally keep up with them!

sew not perfect...

On G's school calendar, Wednesday read: "Wear a shirt with a number on it to school."

Hmmmm...G does not have any sort of sports shirts with numbers, or any shirts with numbers on them.  What should I do?  Well, the cheap and easy answer would be to write a number on a sticker and stick in on her shirt.  But how could I make this task cuter and a lot harder?  I know, I can sew a number on a shirt for her!  With the great luck I had with zig-zag applique on baby E's owl, I should be able to do this no sweat!

OK, this was NOT as easy as I was hoping.  This shape was harder to sew around than the curves and circles of the owl, and the t-shirt knit stretched and bunched.  I knew this of course and should have practiced first, but no, I had to just jump in and go for it.

And CARP, I sewed part of it to the back of the t-shirt!

But if you don't look too closely it still looks cute, and G liked it (she picked 6 because she will turn 6 on her next birthday), which is all that really counts.  I will have to let my desire for perfection go today...

a field trip to the zoo...

G loves field trips.  Obviously they mean a day away from normal classroom work and getting to go out to some place fun with your friends/classmates.  But G has one other big reason for loving field trips...she gets to ride on a bus!  She is pretty jealous of the kids at school that get to ride a bus (our district does not bus to Calvin) and actually asked me if we could move so that she could ride the bus too!  There are 6 scheduled field trips during the school year and parents are encouraged to help with at least one.  Fun for the child to have mom or dad along, and help for the teachers too.  Being that W and C are so small yet though, figuring out logistics for one of us to be able to go on a field trip was harder than we thought.  But we called in Aahma B (thanks so much!) to help us out and watch the boys for a day so I could go along with G's class to the MN zoo in March.  This is one of two trips they get to take to the MN zoo!  There is just too much there to do all in one day.  So this month's trip focused on the aquatic, coral reef and tropical rain forest exhibits as that was the big unit that the kindergarteners were doing this month.  There were 2 teachers and 3 moms along, so we each got a group of 4 students.  Our groups had to stay together, but we didn't have to travel with the rest of the class so that each group could go at the pace and interest of the students in there (one group buzzed through everything twice, one group stayed in the rain forest exhibit almost the whole time).  Mrs. B likes to group the kids so that each student has a friend or someone they are comfortable with as to make things easier for everyone throughout the day.  So my group had G, 2 of her really good friends, and another sweet girl.  We went through the rain forest exhibit, got to watch the feeding of the tropical fish in the big simulated coral reef exhibit, saw the very cool live coral reef, ate our lunch by the monkeys, got to see the sharks and sting rays being fed, and of course checked in with the dolphins (they aren't doing a show, but we did see them swimming around).  Everyone had a great time!

so we ended up getting her new jeans anyway...

my darling daughter wore holes in the right knee of her 3 pairs of jeans in the span of a week and a half...

thought I was being super mom by not just buying her new jeans, but instead sewing adorable patches over the holes so she could keep wearing them...

then in the span of another week and a half, she blew holes in the patches, and also in the other knees of all three jeans...

so we ended up getting her new jeans anyway...

Creative Expressions Night...

At the beginning of March, instructions came home with G from school that we were to help her pick a poem to memorize and perform for her class, family and friends at Creative Expressions Night on March 18.  Once again, I think S and I underestimate what kindergarteners can do, because we both thought that this would be way too much for them.  But happily we were proved wrong again and it was a great night for all of G's class.

G's poem was "Hug-o-War" by Shel Silverstein.  She really liked this poem and it fit her very well.  While we knew that G can perform well at home (goodness knows how many "shows" we have seen her put in in the past years), we didn't know how she would do in front of a "real" audience.  She was fabulous!  She did actions, used her teddy bear as a prop, and spoke slowly, loudly, and clearly.  We were so proud of her!  All of the performers got congratulated, ribbons, and a big rounds of applause, followed of course by hugs from loving parents!

the gingerbread man...

A beloved member of the kindergarten class is the Gingerbread Man.  He makes appearances at the beginning of the year to help teach the kids their shapes, and then periodically throughout the first half of the school year to read his book and play shape games with them.  Unfortunately, in December, the Gingerbread Man ran away!  A cry for help went out the the families and friends and relatives of the kindergarteners to help look for the Gingerbread Man, and then write letters to the class telling them where they saw them.  Then in January, when the class studied different continents, they were so surprised to find out from the letters that the Gingerbread Man was traveling the globe and had been seen in Africa, Europe, North America, and South America!  At the end of the month, the Gingerbread Man returned to the classroom excited to tell the class about his adventures.  But being that he had so much fun traveling, he did not want to stay in the classroom anymore.  So he started traveling to each kindergarteners home, and they had to help keep track of his adventures by writing about them in a big binder that held plenty of paper to write on, all of his world traveling letters, his book, and a nice spot for him to travel to and from school.  The kindergarteners were reminded that the Gingerbread Man was a guest in their homes and they should be polite and treat him as they would any other guest.

G was beyond excited to finally have her turn to take the Gingerbread Man home, and took the responsibility of hosting him very seriously!  She took him along wherever we went, made sure she included him when she played, and introduced him nicely to the hairdresser, our neighbor, and her dogs.

G also set a place for him at the table to eat, and made him a comfortable bed to sleep in!

And here is what she wrote about his adventures at our house:  March 8.  The Gingerbread Man slept in my room.  I played the shape game with my brother and my mom.  I took him to Molly and Kacie's house.  They are dogs.  He went to my haircut with me.

G really likes to write little stories and journal and has been doing some outside work on this at school once a week since October.  G and a couple classmates would head to Mrs. K's room on Friday mornings, and had to write 2 sentences about anything they liked, as well as draw a picture about them.  The one rule was that the teacher would not help spell words for them (something that S and I do all the time for her, and are stopping most of that now! =), they had to sound the words out.  They also learned about simple sentence structure along the way too with spaces between words and periods at the end.  She is finished with that now, and we got a big book home with her page from each week.  It was so neat to see the progress that she made throughout the months she did that!  After seeing her journal from school and how she loved this Gingerbread Man project, we will definitely be doing more of this with her at home!

the children's museum...

...or "fun family and friend field trip" as G dubbed the day.  When we traveled to Edgerton for the wedding last month, G missed a day of school and there happened to be a class trip to the Children's Museum on that day.  G was very excited about the wedding, but pretty bummed out that she had to miss a class trip.  S and I promised her that we would go together as a family when S had his next day off.

To make it a little more special, we invited 2 of G's best friends to come with, A and cousin G.  A's family has a membership, so they came along with us too, which was a lot of fun.  We had a great time painting faces, listening to a very good storytime, and exploring special exhibits on art and legos, as well as all the great permanent exhibits there.

I think they had a little bit of fun...=)
