our big girl (warning - this post contains potty language! =)

Only if you are or have been the parent of a toddler do you really understand what a HUGE milestone potty training is. We bought a potty seat forever ago and started talking about it, but she wasn't ready or interested and we didn't want to force G into anything because I didn't want to "mommy train" her - too much stress and time involved! After she turned 3 we started talking about it a lot more and getting her to sit on her potty seat, but "nothing went in the potty," to quote G's favorite potty book. Then about 3 weeks ago, again to quote her potty book, "something happened!" She peed in the potty! Just once, and then waited another week before doing it again. Then it was only 3 days before she did it again, and then all of a sudden she went once on the potty 3 days in a row. Then I think it clicked in her head. She was upstairs playing and looked at S & I and said, "I think I have to pee on the potty!" Generally when she talks like that, it means she has already done it, which she has been telling us for a really long time now. But when I asked her if she had done it already, she said "NO!" and I think was even surprised herself. So we rushed down and sure enough, she peed on the potty again! Then she did it again and again, and has been peeing on the potty pretty consistently for the past week! No pooping though, but we were just ecstatic that we were this far! And with no gimics, methods, tricks or treats! Just a lot of whooping and hollering and dancing and hugs and kisses. Then 2 days ago, she pooped! Whoo-hoo! She's getting it! We have been using thicker training pants when she is doing well during the day, still using diapers when going out, for naps, distracted periods like playing with cousins and the like. But the rate she is going she is well on her way to big girl underwear and we are well on our way to not having to have 3 in diapers. Oh yeah.

All is not roses though! Once things have started you have to deal with situations like these:

1. We - G, W and I - are running late, G is all ready to go out with a diaper on, I have W strapped in the car, and as I am getting G in, she tells me she has to go potty. Ug! What do I do? I don't want her to regress at all, but she has a diaper on, we are late, W is in the car, so I said that we couldn't go back in and she would either have to hold it or pee in her diaper just this once. What an awful mother!
2. We - again G, W and I - are in REI shopping. W is asleep on my shoulder, we have a mitful of stuff, are trying to try on shoes without waking W up, and G looks at me and says ever so sweetly "Momma, I have to go to the bathroom." Grrr! Guilt pangs from when I told her to pee in her diaper the day before get me though and we go to find a restroom and have to wake W up so I can help G who peed marvelously in her first public restroom. She did ask me where the potty seats for girls were though! =)
3. In church today, I take W out to try to get him to sleep(poor boy is teething!), and S & G soon follow because G 1st says she pooped in her diaper. Nope, false alarm, so they go back in. 5 minutes later they come out again G saying that she has to poop on the potty and wants Momma to help! So we truck all the way downstairs, but she of course doesn't. She at least peed so I wasn't too perturbed. Back up and into church with dadda. Out again 10 minutes later saying she has to poop again. Luckily I have W asleep by this time, pass him off to dadda, and this time she actually did poop! Good thing we sit in the back of church with all the in and out we had today.

So potty training does have it's annoyances, but overall it is wonderful to see our big girl growing up and doing so well with it. Yay G!
