fun friday, 5.24.13...

Aahma B visited earlier in the week and whipped up some up-cycled "aahma-shorts" for each of the kids like she has done for the past few years.  The kids get to pick out the material for the cuffs, and they are definitely super loved shorts for each of them. (this year W's are SUPER up-cycled as the cuff material came from an old button-up shirt of S's that he used to wear a lot in college...love!)

So what fun can be had on a fun friday in our aahma-shorts?
  • Cliff Z-bars for breakfast.  They are the kids' favorite special treat and this decision was totally because it was fun friday and not at all because momma was tired and we needed to get going otherwise G&W would be late for school...=)
  • hugs and a quick chat with church friends that have been away most of the month as we dropped off air mattresses for them to use on a camping trip (Hi DY's!)
  • errands with Momma including little treats along the way (love the free cookies at the ST bakery and all the good tries at Costco!)
  • playing at the playground at school with more church/school friends (thanks for playing with us Ms. B & D!!)
  • playing with Mrs. L and Kacie while we waiting for Uncle J to drop off the core-aerater (fun friday for Dadda, ha!=)
  • going out for ice cream because G passed her next level of math time-test (and being it was much later than it was supposed to be because Momma forgot her wallet earlier, we ate supper out too)
  • going to pick up some more seeds and plants for planting the garden later in the weekend.  So much fun finding watermelon and popcorn plants besides the regulars of tomato, pepper, cucumber, zucchini, green beans (blue lake bush!), and carrots
  • super nice ladies in the garden section gave each kid a flower to take home and plant too - even H, who hugged his the whole entire time we were in the store and didn't want to give it up in the van either
  • staying up late to watch Dadda muscle the big funny machine around the yard until there was no more light left...

fun friday, 5.17.13...

I was panicking.  It was 2:54, H was very much antsy and not interested in PBS kids anymore, C was about to get up from quiet time and I STILL did not have any clue what we were going to do for fun friday.  Now I have been in this situation before and I can always count on playing at a park, except that it was raining...hard!  Not even pull out the umbrellas and boots fun kind of rain, because I thought of that too.  I realize that we can't do super special things every Friday and it was ok to play iPad games or let them watch extra Wild Kratts, or even just go out for a treat like ice cream or Panera muffies.  But no.  Maybe it was because of the cold and the rain, but there was part of me that wanted today to be better than that, to show some effort on my part and I was running out of ideas that I had supplies for (no time to run to the store) or that didn't depend on the weather!

Then there it was.  An post from the library talking about Children's Book Week.  We hadn't been to the library for a while (especially with G!), so what better way to spend a rainy fun friday afternoon.  I hoped it would be fun too, as lately on our library trips, H is destructo-boy and I spend all of my time trying to wrangle him.  So I thought maybe to help the big kids have something besides pick out books to do I would print out a scavenger hunt for them (saw it on a blog last summer and liked the idea!).  BUT our printer does not work so I had to book it (ha! pun intended!) to write out questions long hand on a paper and clipboard.  Then I quick changed H, had bathroom breaks for C and myself, and grabbed some water bottles and TJ's bars for snack in the van and we were out the door just a couple minutes late.

The kids were a lot more excited about the scavenger hunt than I though they would be!  Maybe it was the officialness of the clipboard...

1.  What is the name of the Library?

   - Anoka County Library, Crooked Lake Branch

2.  What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book?  Is it checked out?

-G: The Butter Battle Book, nope!
-W: Scrambled Eggs Super, nope!
-C: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, nope!

(btw, they are total favorites of the moment as these are the last 3 we had checked out. =)

G was the official recorder of the answers, but she drug the boys away from super hero and Star Wars books to help her answer each question.  And have you been wondering where H is?  Thanks to a new program at the library called "Play is important!" there is a BUNCH of new play things in the children's section.  So that really kept him busy checking everything out.

Here H made us a snack...

3.  What is the call number for the Veggie Tale DVDs?

- DVD
     E
  VEG

4.  Who is the author of the Clifford books?

-Norman Bridwell

(and C surprised the other 2 by knowing exactly where the Clifford books are; in a special "collections" section with Dr. Seuss books, Curious George books, etc.)

Here H played with this fun magnet toy...

5.  Find a kids book on CD whose author starts with C (we talked about how authors names are categorized by LAST name here).  What is the title?

- Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow

(they picked it because they know it is one of cousin E's favorites...Hi E!!)

I didn't get a picture of number 5 because here H tried to take all the books off the shelf...

On to the back!  Ha, they thought they were done too...

6.  How many Elephant and Piggie books (we love Mo Willems!) are on the shelf today?

- nine

(but after we left only five =)

7.  Find a children's magazine and write down the title and how many pages are in it

- Ranger Rick, 39

(W: "Look momma!  It is a proboscis monkey!"  thank you wild kratts and my sweet boy's insane ability to know everything about every animal and bird)

After distracting him from the full book shelves, here H played with the magnet letters...

8.  Find a book with animals for characters and write the fifth word on the 21st page.

- "for"
from Rhinos who Rescue by Julie Mammano

(and see what did I tell you about Star Wars and super hero books?)

(last one! and probably our favorite, or at least mine because I love our children's librarian!!)

9a.  What is the name of the children's librarian?

- Miss Jenn!

(she does storytime for the kids too so we have gotten to know her well over the past few years.  she is so sweet and we love talking with her...even H pulled himself away from the toys to help with this question!)

9b.  What is her favorite kids book and is it in?

- Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney, and yes!

and here H tried to check himself out....(yep!  time to go!!!)

Miss Jenn gave the kids stickers for completing their scavenger hunt (thank you!), and after hugs all around, we loaded up our big pile of checked out books (I love our library because they will still help you check out, you don't have to use the self checkouts if you don't want to =) into G's & W's backpacks because it was STILL raining, and headed out.

Happy Children's Book Week!  Thank you to Miss Jenn and all our librarians who encourage the love of reading in our kids, and make our library and our little part of the world a more beautiful place.  (Everyone should read Miss Rumphius, regardless of your age!)

(pictureless) fun friday, 5.10.13...

(sorry this one is a little late!  the past few weeks have been full of a yucky head cold and terrible sleep patterns for me - and the 18 month old cutting canines.  in fact I didn't take any photos this day at all...doesn't mean we didn't have some fun, though. =)

  • BEAUTIFUL weather outside
  • playdate with Pippin at our house for the day
  • baked banana yoogurt oatmeal chocolate chip muffins and made sure all the neighbors got some warm (2 may or may not have been stuck in a mailbox...)
  • bonus pizza lunch at school, and both C & H got to come with!
  • packages in the mail (cute kids clothes and the laptop battery I forgot to tell S about because I was too excited about the cute clothes)
  • played on the school playground after school (the kids always think this is the best!)
  • S & I closed on refinancing our mortgage - the money we are saving each month WELL worth the 45 minutes of signing and initialing paperwork
  • kids watched the blues clues movie while we signed
  • quick supper of ravioli before...
  • ...I went to a Pampered Chef party at the neighbors by myself
  • ...and S took the kids to Costco for some Mother's Day surprise getting

a blessed mother's day 2013...

~ For Mother's Day, I asked not to have to cook and if we could have a dessert - they surprised me with Costco chicken alfredo waiting in the oven when we got home from church and then a tuxedo chocolate mousse cake!  YUM!!!  (and then crazy bread for supper so I didn't even have to make breadsticks!)
~ bonus gift of a big wind catcher for the garden to replace my beloved windmill that bit the dust (kids kept telling me my gift was taller than Dadda!!! =)
~ so many hugs and kisses through the day (even though the children were definitely NOT angels all day)
~ Dadda and kids humored my request for pictures with each of them (just for today and then I can go back to the comfort of being behind the camera!)
~ video chatted with both of our mothers (thankful for that technology!)

Thank you so much S and my sweet kiddos, I couldn't have had a more wonderful Mother's Day!!
I am so blessed to be G's and W's and C's and H's momma,
and to have such wonderful mothers in my life!

Oh!  And I almost forgot one of my most precious gifts of the day - this painting from W that they did in Kindergarten last week.  He told me that he picked the colors just for me, purple and yellow because they are Vikings colors.  I love it because those are HIS favorite colors.

(And I knew it was coming as I got this one from G 2 years ago when she was in Kindergarten!  Love this project!)

fun friday, 5.3.13...

It was Grandparents' Day!!  Such a fun day with the Aahmas.  First they spent the morning with C&K&G for a homeschool "grandparents' day" of sorts then they were off to Calvin Christian for the afternoon to enjoy a music program and time in both W & G's classrooms.

We are so thankful for the love and support we get from grandparents!!!

fun friday, 4.26.13...

THANKFULLY this is all that is left of last week's big snowman!  Spring weather is finally here with lots of ...

SUN!!!!

What is that strange warm bright thing in the sky, momma?

Friday afternoon was sunny and warm (72 degrees F!), perfect for swinging...

and running around with the puppies from next door (this cute little 11 wk old was visiting, she is Mrs. L's daughter's new puppy, Harlow)!

All that running around called for a yummy snack.  I had leftovers in the house from when G and Aahma R made rice krispie bars for GEMS Sunday last week, so I thought why not try a cute idea I had seen over Easter somewhere in a magazine...

1. Mix up rice krispie bar recipe adding in M&M's (we only had 5 left in the house so we threw those in and some chocolate chips)
2. spray inside of plastic easter egg with cooking spray
3. pack the rice krispie mixture in both sides of the easter egg - really pack it!

 4.  sneaking is allowed (when momma says its ok =)
5.  when both sides are full, put them together - you will really have to smash them!

6.  open the easter egg and be amazed and wow'd when a rice krispie egg comes out!
7.  as the momma, make a mental note that if you want these to turn out as pretty as the magazine article, you should not use chocolate chips instead of easter M&M'.
8.  best if eaten outside!

We did one more little project (boy, nothing like some sun and warmth to get the creative out!), but you will have to wait til later this week to see it!
