ah, baby h...=)

Baby H is relatively new around here and is due for a little blog time. =)  What a precious addition to our family!  He is just a few days shy of 3 months and we already can't imagine life without him.  We are finally coming out of that "newborn baby schedule" fog and settling into somewhat of a routine with our family.  That feels good!

H is a good baby.  The first few weeks of his life were filled with the best baby faces, stretches, yawns, and cuddles.  He has always had his days and nights straight, thankfully, and is only up once, usually, between midnight and 7.  S and I love holding sleeping babies and it has been so nice to snuggle down with H.  Who loves to be either snuggled in close and upright.  H also likes to be held out so that he can see us.  He has been great at connecting with our faces from very early on.  It is even more fun now that he is smiling at us!  H added that new trick at around 7 weeks.  He started really kicking and waving his arms around that time too.  Now he is starting to smile and coo and talk and G even got a giggle out of him the other day.  It is wonderful to see him growing and changing and connecting with us.

Life is not always easy with a new baby.  H had some issues with nursing and eating that required a lot of time and patience (and tears and frustration and overall it has been one of the most challenging periods of time for me as a mom) over these first few months, which is why you haven't seen me here on the blog lately.  But I won't bore you with all of those details today, just the happy news that he is now nursing and growing like a champ and we are so thankful for that blessing.  So are our 3 other children who have had to be very patient at times when momma and dadda could not respond to them immediately.

The kids love H to pieces and have been so good with him.  G loves to be another little momma and likes to help with anything that has to do with H and we often have to remind her of things that only Momma and Dadda can do with him (like pick him up!).  She loves to hold him and we make sure that she gets a good amount of H-time when she gets home from school.  W loves H, but his attention span with him is a lot shorter than G's.  W gets a kick out of mimicking every noise that H makes.  Which is cute and all until H is fussing a lot, then things get overly loud!  C is the one we were the most worried about, but there has been no issues.  In fact C can't get enough of H and is very gentle.  Whenever C enters a room we are in he ask's "where's Baby H?."  Then, "Can I talk to Baby H?"  And a lot of "Can I hold Baby H?."  When S and I help him hold H, he will look lovingly at H and say "Hiiiiiiii Baby H!" followed 10 seconds later by "that's 'nuff!"

But where you really can see H's growth is through a photo or two...or 21. =)

christmas letter 2011...

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Don’t worry, your eyes are not going bad, this picture of us on Christmas Day by our tree is fuzzy (kind of like my self-timer camera skills)!  It is kind of fitting though as that is how we felt at the end of the year with all that was going on (life with a newborn fog, all the holiday hoopla, and sadness of losing Steve’s dear Grandpa Aukeman with Steve flying out for the funeral and my dad coming to help me take care of our 4 littles).  Writing a Christmas letter seemed like too daunting of a task this year, but we so enjoyed getting letters from many of you that it was a project I still wanted to do, even if it is a little late.  So to help me focus a little I started looking through photos of the past year (as I usually do to help me write our yearly letter), and thought that would be a good way to share with you all that has happened in our family in 2011.

In February, we happily added another member to my extended family when my brother Lucas got married to Jessica.  We had a wonderful time celebrating with them at their wedding in Edgerton.  It was as beautiful and fun as the happy couple themselves.  One of the best things about weddings is all the family that is there.  And along with a great time with my siblings and parents, we had fun visiting with a lot of aunts and uncles and cousins we don’t see often.

In March there was another addition to the Roskamp family.  Our neice Evelyn Joanna was born on March 18 to my brother Marcus and his wife Amy.  We were privileged to be able to go and visit sweet Evelyn (and her mom and dad) over Grace’s spring break when Evie was only 2 weeks old!  This kids love Evelyn and are very good with her.  We were also excited to share with everyone around this time that our family would be growing as well as we were expecting a new little one in November!!

In June we celebrated Steve’s parents’ 40th anniversary (Alnora surprised us all by bringing and wearing her wedding dress!).

We also had fun attending the first Kole Family Reunion, held at Inspiration Hills Bible camp in northwestern Iowa.

One of our biggest projects of the year was a remodel in our kitchen and entryway.  We have been saving for quite a while and have had this project in the back of our minds for quite some time and finally everything lined up to get it done this past summer.  With a great contractor we found through friends at church, we were able to extend our entryway out 6 feet, and redo our kitchen (floor, cupboards, appliances, even the layout!).  We were very happy with how things turned out.  The project took most of July and August to complete and the kids were troopers through the whole thing with lots of fun construction stuff to watch (cement truck day was the favorite!).

With the chaos of the remodel, we were not able to travel long distance for a vacation.  But we were still able to do some fun things together without driving very far at all.  We did a “staycation” and spent a couple days on the south side of the cities taking in the science museum, sculpture gardens, zoo, and a Twins game.  Although if you ask the kids their favorite part they will all tell you “staying at a hotel and swimming!!!!”

We were also able to go camping with Steve’s folks at Sibley State Park near Willmar, MN.  We had great weather for mid-August and really enjoyed our time outdoors!

But by far the most exciting event of the past year was the birth of our son, Henry Kole Bruin, on 11-02-2011.  We are overjoyed to welcome this little one to our family and we couldn’t love him more, but do tease him that he is trying to make a statement as the fourth child with all the issues I had during pregnancy, a long labor, and difficulties in nursing after he was born that we have not experienced before.  Grace, Willem, and Carsten adore him and the adjustment for them has been very easy at home.  They are always asking if they can hold him or talk to him.  He will definitely be doted on as he grows and we are happy about that!  Steve again received 5 weeks paternity leave from Costco which was a huge blessing in getting adjusted to life at home with 4 small children.  We had a lot of fun introducing Henry to his extended family with visits from all the Bruin’s shortly after his birth and all the Roskamp’s at Thanksgiving.

I can’t end this Christmas letter without talking about our kiddos though.  Our life revolves a lot around them and it has been a wonderful year seeing each of them grow so much.  Grace is six and a big 1st grader!  She loves school and is doing very well.  Her favorite activities are art and music and it has been so fun to watch her sing in school programs.  She sings with such enthusiasm and joy!  Grace is also a very big help at home, especially when she wants to be, and we have loved seeing her mature this year and be able to do more things independently.  Willem is 4 ½ and a pre-schooler.  He, I think, has made some of the biggest emotional changes this year, going from being very attached to mom and dad and clinging to us wherever we went, to being able to happily go to a pre-school class at our local nature center once a week.  He is still our tender-hearted boy that can always make us laugh.  He has also learned to read this year, all on his own, and is can always be found with a book if not playing ball or trucks.  Carsten just turned 3!  Hard to believe our little guy is already that old.  Especially when we think back to the beginning of last year when he just learned how to jump and sentences were still new to him.  Now he runs all over the place and talks very well.  He loves to do anything and everything that his older brother and sister are doing, but is starting to show an independent side as well.  And little Henry!  He is 2 months old and is a sweet baby.  He loves being held, is smiling at all of us now, coos and squiggles, and is loved on by all of us daily.  The 3 big kids love to play togther inside and outside and are looking forward to when Henry can join in.  Steve and I are so thankful that the Lord has blessed us with these children.  And when things are fuzzy all we really need to do is look at them to remember to focus on our family and what God has in store for us in 2012.  We hope that He brings you blessings and focus as well!

Much love,

our Christmas season...

a baptism and a funeral...

S's dear Grandpa A passed away December 15.  He had been struggling since Thanksgiving, so it wasn't unexpected, but still hard, especially around Christmas.  Grandpa was such a faith-filled man and prayed for each of his family members daily, including new little H.  We have been blessed by Grandpa's example and will be sure to pass down his memory to baby H.  We had scheduled to have H baptized on December 18, and thought about postponing it, but S's parent encouraged us to go ahead with baptism (even though they would not be there) and then decide what we wanted to do about coming out to the funeral.  We decided that it was too much for H being so young and small to go that far (Grand Rapids, MI), so S flew out Monday to be there with his family, and my dad stayed with us while S was gone for which I was extremely grateful (not quite ready to do 4 small children solo!).  The funeral went well and good family time was had by all there.  But back to baptism, which will forever be linked with Grandpa's funeral in our heads, but what better connection with both being God's covenant children.  The family crowd was small at baptism, but it was a wonderful morning celebrating H and God's promises to him while remembering God's same promises to Grandpa A.

*thanks to Dad for his sneaky iPhone photos during the service
S and I sang as we have for our previous children's baptisms, a wonderful song composed by our friend Emily Lund.

Thanksgiving and a little R love for Baby H...

Before Christmas overtakes us here, I wanted to share with the class "Why I am thankful for our fabulous Thanksgiving."

  • I am so thankful for M&A and adorable niece E who spent the whole week taking care of us - cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping, preparing for Thanksgiving, and loving up on all our kids including lots of H-snuggle time.
  • (I am also thankful for the fabulous write-up of our time together that A did on their blog - such. great. photos.)
  • I am thankful for the entire R clan who drove up to spend Thanksgiving with us.
  • I am thankful to most of the clan for staying in a hotel - we love you all but that really helped keep the house sane with a 2.5 week old baby!
  • I am thankful for my grandma who came along and all the wonderful gifts she brought Baby H - his stocking, baptism outfit, "Nana quilt", booties and burp rags
  • I am thankful for L&J who took our big kids swimming at the hotel pool
  • I am thankful for Mom and Dad and Grandma who recovered our chairs (in what was I swear less than 30 minutes)
  • I am thankful for playing games and visiting and laughing and eating such good food with my wonderful family - each one of you is truly a blessing to us!
And now for a few bunch of pictures!  The first set is a little Baby H love from Nana and aunts and uncles...then some for all the kids...and finally some from a photo shoot that the lovely c.e.b. did with our family (hopefully I am not spoiling any Christmas card pictures...other than ours, but the way things are going you might see ours by Valentine's Day if we are lucky!).

Nana and H spent a lot of quality time with each other...I think they both loved it.
